In 1981, while on a trip to India, the famed dancer Sudha Chandra Sekhar (nee Doraiswamy) experienced a vision of the Cosmic Dancing Lord Shiva in her dream as she slept.
He asked her for an offering, and she said she only had herself to give. The Lord smiled and placed a terrifying snake from his own neck in her fearful shaking hands. His heavenly voice resonated in the heavens of her mind, announcing that she must teach and perform the Tandav in praise of the Night of Shiva. She begged him to retrieve the snake from her and promised she would learn, perform and teach the Cosmic Dance to give praise to Lord Shiva's power of transformation through form and movement. As she did, Lord Shiva blessed her with the ability to surmount tragedy and difficulty as she focused on sharing her dance arts with all generations and all people around the world.
Since then, years of practice and training have brought hundreds of dancers, from young toddlers to celebrity performers to the Tandav stage to honor Lord Shiva's blessing for Mahasivaratri. Tandav is held annunally in the Metro Detroit area with over 100 participants every show, with items numbering into the 30s. Soloists, arangetram students, established dancers, new students all gather with mutual respect and love to celebrate the cycle of creation and destruction - transformation, as we experience it in the human moving body.
